The two different renewal periods catch out a lot of trainers. Provide First Aid is generally accepted for three years, while CPR is expected annually, and the CPR clock keeps ticking even though the first aid certificate is still inside its three year window.
When you complete HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, you complete HLTAID009 Provide CPR within it, so both start on the same date. Twelve months later the CPR component needs refreshing on its own, and again at twenty four months. At thirty six months the whole first aid certificate is due, and completing it resets both clocks together.
There is no grace period in practice. A registration body or insurer looking at your file sees either a current certificate or an expired one. Trainers have been suspended from a gym floor and had renewals held up over a CPR certificate that expired a fortnight earlier. There is no penalty course or reinstatement process, you simply book the unit again, but you may lose working days in the meantime.
A CPR refresher is the same ninety minute practical session as the original unit, with a short online component beforehand. You demonstrate compressions, rescue breaths, choking response and defibrillator use, and your certificate is issued the same day so you can update your records immediately.
Every nationally recognised unit you complete is recorded against your Unique Student Identifier, so if you lose a certificate you can retrieve the record yourself rather than chasing a training organisation.
